Year of the Horse
Club Studio 80 wanted to do something different with their venue for their regular night "Year Of The Horse." For this show we built 6 custom high brightness 1-by-1 meter RGB LED panels and wrote a custom VJ application to drive them in real time. The panels are reconfigurable, allowing for multiple different stage designs. Our "visual synthesizer" reacts to the music live, resulting is a hypnotic, ever shifting series of lights which react to the music in a compelling and unique way.
We have done four editions of "Year of the Horse" thus far, and are looking forward Year of the Horse 5 this summer. (This video is from Edition #4)
The application (AtomSampler) is structured around a series of modulators which are driven by audio analysis and low frequency modulators. These modulators, in turn, drive a series of shader parameters. This visual data is encoded in our custom library and sent to our custom LED panels using Teensy microcontrollers. This application was developed from the ground up in C++ and OpenGL, including audio analysis, visual processing and rendering, Midi controls for the VJ, and our LED control library.
The application can also control any lights that are already in a club environment. By using Midi signals to control the light board in Studio 80, we were able to use the same modulators that drive our LED panels to control the lights. This means that both the lights and visuals were controlled through the same software environment, merging two worlds which are usually distinct. The result is a more integrated club experience.
