Protokols Live Show

Von Nohrfeldt / The Rest Is Noise / Rewire

We worked with avant-garde techno ensemble Von Nohrfeldt to create their tour show for their album "Protokols." We have performed twice with them so far, at the Rewire Festival in The Hague and "The Rest Is Noise" supporting Robert Henke ad Muziekgebouw aan het IJ in Amsterdam.

The show was based on a new program which interfaces with our custom LED panels and 'listens' to the individual artists on stage. Based on their musical input, live visuals are generated which echo, metaphorically, what each musician is doing. As Von Nohrfeldt is a live act that employs improvisation in their work, it was important to create a unique show which captures the feeling of their music and works with the artists.

Technical Information

The architecture for this show is based on the same framework as the Atom Sampler (see Year of the Horse) and is based around filter stacks. These control how a single source video is affected by the music on a per-panel basis, by driving shader parameters by audio frequency bands derived from the music in real time. The panels are mapped across the source images using a a UV layout system, and a system of presets allows us to create different looks for different parts of the show; and switch them quickly and cleanly.

All of the software is written in C++ and OpenGL; including the panel controller library. The panels are designed and built by Naivi.
